When the Wind Ran Out of Breath

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Mark 4:35-41 (NIV)

Life has a way of knocking the wind out of us—a diagnosis, a loss, a storm we never saw coming.

But the same Jesus who calmed the waves on the Sea of Galilee is with us today—calm, steady, faithful.

This painting was born from that truth. Every brushstroke holds both the chaos of the storm and the peace of His presence—the One who restores breath when we’ve lost it. And while it tells my story, it’s meant for more. Each print helps make space for women to rest, breathe again and encounter the God who calms the chaos at a Broken & Beautiful Retreat.

The Heart Behind the Art

At first glance, this piece is about a storm—waves crashing, wind roaring, and then, the sudden stillness of Jesus’ presence. The power of His words. But for me, it’s more than paint on canvas. It holds a turning point in my own story.

In the middle of a health scare, God placed a paintbrush in my hand. What began as a small attempt to quiet my anxious heart became a sacred rhythm of creating with Him. Out of that season came When the Wind Ran Out of Breath—a visual reminder that even in chaos, His peace remains.

It’s one of the most meaningful pieces I’ve ever painted, because it carries my story of fear, healing and God’s peace in the storm. This piece didn’t start as art—it started as survival. The story behind it is raw, real and full of God’s fingerprints.

Hey, I’m Stephanie—co-founder of Broken & Beautiful Retreats, the artist behind this piece, and the woman God met with a paintbrush in hand. This painting holds my story… and I pray it makes space for yours too.

Storms don’t have the last word.

Mark 4 tells us: Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

Or as The Message translation puts it: The wind ran out of breath; the sea became smooth as glass.

Imagine the fear as the waves nearly capsized the disciples’ boat. This storm wasn’t distant—it was here, threatening them. Yet while they panicked, Jesus slept peacefully. He was the calm, able to stand through any storm. And He did.

That image—the calm in the chaos—became the title and heartbeat of this painting. It’s a reminder that storms don’t get the last word. Jesus does.

He does for me.
He does for you.
And He does for all the women who attend our retreats.
